Read the Devotion

A new song that makes you sing, lifts up your spirit and lines up the melody line of your story. Let me show you the new song in Psalm 40. This is episode one of MTS Pray in May Devotions. I’m Russ Smidt, director of Training across the storyline of Salvation History in the Bible, a new song is an uplifting, all-encompassing hymn that can’t be contained by old compositions.

It bursts through the bar lines and saws above the stave of what we’ve sung before. Psalm 40 describes a slimy pit, a pit of mud, and mire. It’s a place that represents trouble. Trial terror, temptation, tainted purity. It’s a slimy pit that you and I know well. But there’s a rescue! Because of the rescue – the psalmist says it like this, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”

This is the new song of King David. It’s the new song of our brother and saviour Jesus. Let’s make it our new song of dependent joy today.

Lord God, we turn to you today. We sing your new song of praise. We depend on you alone. Line up our joy and use us to win the world for Christ. Amen.
