Meet an MTS Trainer – Brett Middleton

‘An MTS apprenticeship is the place where big questions can be answered. Am I the right person for paid gospel ministry? Do I have the desire and drive? Am I prepared to serve? Am I ready to step into this without looking back? Your years spent asking these questions while you serve the kingdom in new and challenging ways will not be wasted.’

Brett Middleton is an MTS Trainer at St Luke’s Anglican Church, Miranda.

How did your MTS Apprenticeship prepare you for the job you are doing now?

I made a bunch of mistakes as an apprentice. Having a trainer with you makes the apprenticeship years a safe place to mess-up, learn and grow. More and more I see how my apprenticeship years set the expectations I have for life as a gospel worker. It taught me to expect the highs and lows: how to graciously enjoy the former and not be shipwrecked by the latter.

What are some of the rewards and challenges of training an MTS Apprentice?

Training an MTS apprentice forces you to think carefully about your ministry. Suddenly you are being asked to explain the decisions you make, the priorities you have and the theology that lies behind it all. Having an apprentice is a constant reminder that ministry should be about ‘equipping God’s people for works of service’.

What skills have you seen develop in your MTS apprentice?

We’re only worked together since the beginning of the year but I love seeing Amani gain confidence in small group and large group bible teaching. He is developing skills as an SRE teacher and a one-to-one discipler. I’m looking forward to seeing how he handles running a team and thinking together about schools based mission.

Why should someone considering working in gospel ministry do an MTS Apprenticeship?

An MTS apprenticeship is the place where big questions can be answered. Am I the right person for paid gospel ministry? Do I have the desire and drive? Am I prepared to serve? Am I ready to step into this without looking back? Your years spent asking these questions while you serve the kingdom in new and challenging ways will not be wasted.
